A Positive Personal Reaction to Attending the Alzheimer’s Show
With this year’s Show just around the corner, here’s a personal view of what it’s like to go along, from a previous attendee:
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first attended the Alzheimer’s Show last year. Having been made aware of the event through a colleague of mine, I wondered how much value I might be able to get out of it, if anything.
Like most people, I’d obviously heard about the disease and had paid some attention to the various TV shows and news reports about the ‘looming crisis’ in dementia care for older people. I wouldn’t exactly put myself in the category of the ‘worried well’, but certainly I had concerns.

Whirlwind romance to dementia diagnosis at just 46.
- Rosemary Westwell’s husband, John, was diagnosed with behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) when he was just 46.
- He is about to turn 72 and has been living in a care home full-time for a number of years.
- He can no longer speak or move, and needs 24-hour care.
- Rosemary has written a powerful book about his experience, called John, Dementia and Me, and is speaking at this year’s Alzheimer’s Show about their experience.
