Drugs Discovery Summit to include focus on Biomarkers and GP early detection

This year’s Alzheimer’s & Dementia Show, London ExCel 14 - 15 June, organised by ROAR B2B and Draw Events, will for the first time include a Drugs Discovery Summit for GPs, nurses, and community carers, providing insights into the latest advancements in research and treatment options as well as practical tools to guide and support patients.

Chaired by Professor Fiona Ducotterd, Chief Scientific Officer, Alzheimer’s Research UK | UCL Drug Discovery Institute, a key focus of the one-day Drugs Discovery Summit taking place on Friday 14th June will be on helping GPs and professional carers recognise key signs and symptoms that will improve early detection. There are estimated to be just under 71,000 people living with young onset dementia in the UK, and less than half of these are known to GP practices.

Certain symptoms are often put down to depression, stress or even hormonal imbalance and individuals themselves may not recognise or want to recognise that they are having difficulties, particularly when they are otherwise feeling fit and well. However, the adjustment to loss of employment, reduced access to hobbies and interests can result in social isolation and psychological symptoms.

One of the three Drugs Discovery Summit panels taking place on Friday 14th June will include:

  • Managing expectations and balancing hope for future advancements within the current limitations of treatment

  • Differentiating promising research from established treatment options.

  • Empowering patients and families in shared decision-making and providing access to resources and support groups.

Additionally there will be a number of presentations throughout the day including:

  • Fatima Salih, Scientific Adviser in the Science Policy and Research Programme, NICE on Potential issues and challenges in evaluation of disease-modifying dementia treatments.

  • Dr Amanda Heslegrave, Senior Research Fellow, UKDRI Fluid Biomarker Laboratory on Biomarkers in the era of disease modifying treatments.

Since 2010 The Alzheimer’s & Dementia Show has established itself as the must attend dementia care event for care providers, professionals, and members of the public looking for new ideas and practical solutions. Partners and supporters over the years have included Alzheimer’s Society, Alzheimer’s Research, Dementia UK, The National Activity Providers Association (NAPA) and Training2Care.

Exclusively to The Alzheimer’s & Dementia Show 2024:

The Virtual Dementia Tour & Training Experience is for anyone working in any form of dementia care or living with someone with dementia. It offers a greater knowledge and understanding of how to improve the lives of those with dementia by experiencing an immersive tour taking eight minutes followed by a tailored 75 minute individual debriefing and training session.

Dementia Interpreters – learning the ‘language’ of dementia takes away your ability to speak, see, hear and move your body and is the first experiential course specifically designed to simulate the communication needs of people living with dementia. It forces you to find new ways to communicate and recognise how to better understand living with dementia.

Nigel Ward, the show’s founder and organiser said: “Over the last 11 years our annual event has strived to deliver practical help and expert guidance to care professionals as well as unpaid members of the public caring for those with dementia. In the continuing absence of more robust financial support, both persons living with dementia and their carers desperately need and deserve all the help and reassurance they can get.

“Under one roof, with straightforward access to products and information from trusted suppliers and CPD accredited experts, visitors can increase their knowledge and confidence which in turn benefits the quality of care they provide.”

According to Alzheimer’s Research the cost of caring for people with dementia is more than £25bn a year. In the UK it is estimated around 1.6 million people will be affected by dementia by 2050 – up from 900,000 today.
